Written by Artem Kachanovskyi 3p, the Editor-in-chief of the European Go Journal

The main annual event of European go, the European Go Congress, was held in Warsaw from July 19th – August 2nd. Shortly before it started, we published the May & June edition of our magazine.

May & June edition cover

Some of our readers told me that this is their favorite cover. Looking at this stunning art made by Vitaliia Kalmutska, you can feel a refreshing and light breath of wind on a hot summer day.

This issue includes plenty of interesting material, such as:

  • An interview with Dmytro Yatsenko 5d, President of the Ukrainian Go Federation and a player with nearly 50 years of experience
  • A report on the European team’s experience in the Chinese C League with a brief interview with Tanguy Le Calvé 1p accompanied by a complete collection of games (PDF + SGF)
  • Commentary on the deciding game of the 15th Chunlan Cup final match between Yang Kaiwen 9p and Park Junghwan 9p

There is also commentary by Li Ang 3p on a fragment of a legendary game between Sakata Eio 9p and Fujisawa Hideyuki 9p, Art & Photography, puzzles and much more. The May & June edition is available in both digital and printed format on our website, the same as all the other past editions.

European Go Journal in Warsaw

The EGC in Warsaw was the first time that we exhibited the European Go Journal. It was not easy to bring nearly 80 kg of printed material to Warsaw, but it was definitely worth it – many participants of the EGC showed interest in our product. I was happy to meet and talk to the people related to the European Go Journal: proofreaders, writers, artists, readers and fans. We sold many copies of the past editions of the Journal and every single copy of our new product – the European Go Yearbook 2024. After I returned home, people continued to show interest in the Yearbook, so I printed some more copies – you can still order it on our website!

European Championship

I also played in the European Go Congress and took 3rd place in the individual European Championship and 2nd place in the Pandanet European Team Championship with the Ukrainian team.

We plan to publish the next issue of the European Go Journal, July & August, in the first half of September. I will share my impressions from the European Go Congress in Warsaw and comment on the most exciting moments from the games I played. The new European Champion, Mateusz Surma 3p, will also comment on his final game against Valerii Krushelnytskyi 7d. I asked one of the artists I met at the EGC to paint a special cover dedicated to this event. I’ve already seen the sketches and I am sure you will not be disappointed! As usual, there will be lots of other excellent content: Li Ang 3p sent in a new chapter of his Treasure Go Collection series dedicated this time to legendary Honinbo Shusaku, Dai Junfu 8d continues his Matering Ko series, etc. I recommend you to subscribe on Patreon not to miss any future issue of the European Go Journal!
