October 2025 Newsletter
Oct 29, 2025Written by Artem Kachanovskyi 3p, Editor-in-chief of the European Go Journal
The majority of the July & August edition of the European Go Journal is dedicated to the European Go Congress (EGC) held from July 19th to August 2nd in Warsaw. It was an exciting holiday of go and a perfect opportunity to meet friends for numerous players from all around the globe, including myself.

It all starts with the stunning cover made by the artist working under the pseudonym Golustration, who I was glad to meet at the EGC. The front cover features the Mermaid of Warsaw playing go and the Royal Castle in the background.
I wrote a detailed report on the EGC, reviewed some fragments from my own games and prepared the Guess the Next Move chapter based on the games from this event. Mateusz Surma 3p commented on his final game of the European Championship against Valerii Krushelnytskyi 7d. Prof. Nam Chihyung, the President of the International Society of Go Studies (ISGS), wrote a report on the 3rd International Conference on Go held by the ISGS at the EGC. In the Art & Photography chapter, you will find additional EGC-themed sketches made by Golustration and a collage of photography taken at this event by Harry van der Krogt.

Dai Junfu 8d and Li Ang 3p continue their series – Mastering the Ko and Treasure Go Collection, respectively. In the July & August edition, you will find the first part of Ang’s chapter dedicated to the legendary Honinbo Shusaku. His biography is a must-read for any player. In the next issue, September & October, Ang will share with us a precious item from his collection – a goban inscribed by this great master.
If you missed the July & August edition, I strongly recommend you to buy it on our website!

In the September & October edition, we will report on such important European events as the Women’s and Student Championships. Also, at the beginning of October, the European and Japanese professionals played an online match – the 1st Kagaribi Cup. We will take a look at it in detail.
September and October saw plenty of important events on the top-level international arena, too. For instance, Shin Jinseo 9p won a new title – the World Strongest Player. I will comment on the deciding game of the final match Shin played against Tu Xiaoyu 9p.
There will be plenty of other interesting material. To receive future issues of the European Go Journal automatically, subscribe on Patreon. If you choose one of the Gold Supporter tiers, your name will be printed on the last page of the Journal as a special thanks to our most dedicated supporters!
